Drought and the feeding of backyard birds?

Posted by Filed Under Thistle Bird Feeder with 1 Comment

I usually cut the backyard birds off for the summer months, setting feeders out in the fall, but with this year’s drought in GA, I’m wondering if there will be enough natural sources of food this summer. Should I continue feeding through the summer this year? I always keep the bird bath clean and filled. That’s been very popular this summer.

American Goldfinchs

Here are some clips of one of my favorite birds, the American Goldfinch. Since my last video I shot of these beauties I’ve gotten some new feeders in which they don’t have to hang upside down to feed from them. These feeders are from Droll Yankee and are easy to fill and keep clean. The seed is Pennington Thistle seed. The background music is from Kevin MacLeod and called “Stoic Morning” found here: www.incompetech.com Here is some information on the Goldfinch I found online at Wikipedia, much more at the link below. en.wikipedia.org The American Goldfinch (Carduelis tristis), also known as the Eastern Goldfinch and Wild Canary, is a North American bird in the finch family. It is migratory, ranging from southern Canada to North Carolina during the breeding season, and from just south of the Canadian border to Mexico during the winter. The only finch in its subfamily which undergoes a complete molt, the American Goldfinch displays sexual dimorphism in its coloration; the male is a vibrant yellow in the summer and an olive color during the winter months, while the female is a dull yellow-brown shade which brightens only slightly during the summer. The male displays brightly colored plumage during the breeding season to attract a mate. The American Goldfinch is a granivore and adapted for the consumption of seedheads, with a conical beak to remove the seeds and agile feet to grip the stems of seedheads while feeding. It is a social bird, and will gather in large flocks while

HELP! What do you feed a Baltimore Oriole??

Posted by Filed Under Thistle Bird Feeder with 3 Comments

I live in Illinois and we always have a hummingbird feeder out in the front, and lately a baltimore oriole has been showing up, perched on the feeder. Then he’ll start flying around our windows and sitting on our windowsills trying to look in. Its like he wants something. I’d like to know what to feed him so he’ll stay. What attracts them? And why does he keep trying to get in the house? No other bird sits on our window like that.
