Is it a good idea to fill bird feeders in the summer as well as winter?

Posted by Filed Under Thistle Bird Feeder with 4 Comments

I’ve heard that it’s best not to encourage wild birds to become too dependent on feeders and that in warmer weather they can easily find their own food. What’s the best thing to do? I really enjoy seeing them outside kitchen window every day at the hanging feeder, so maybe it’s for myself that I want to do this!

This is video of mostly Sparrows feeding at my feeder after I modified it by incorporating A Directv Satellite Dish into it’s design. Anyone out there who may want to make one, might consider A Satellite Dish. It can be mounted to A post or the side of A building or as in my case mounted on A metal rod I drove in the ground. The birds seem to enjoy it, and I get the pleasure of watching them feed.

What is the best type of wild bird feeder for an apartment?

Posted by Filed Under Thistle Bird Feeder with 3 Comments

I live on the bottom floor, I can step off my back porch on to a little grassy area that I call my backyard that slopes down slightly and looks out into the woods. I also live on the end of the building so I have the entire left side of my building as my grassy "backyard" I got real lucky on my apartment positioning.

My office window that faces the "yard" and I was thinking of putting a feeder on the window so I can see the birds as I work, but then I read an article about how that was the number one death of wild birds, so I’m not so sure I want to do that anymore. I could put a poll up but I don’t cut the grass and I’m not sure what would happen to it. I do have a covered porch but I can’t see it all that well from my office window.

Does anyone have any ideas as to where I can put a bird feeder? Any suggestions will help..

Any pictures of feeders or links to any websites would also be very helpful!
Here are 2 window feeders I found and liked . . . would they be dangerous?
